Research project: Transport and fractionation of hydrothermally derived metals from different hydrothermal vent systems
My PhD Project is part of the TONGARIFT Project funded by the BMBF. During the RV Sonne cruise SO263 in June 2018, hydrothermal fluids in the NE Lau Back-arc and NE Tonga Arc were sampled. In addition to endmember fluids, diluted hydrothermal plumes in the water column were sampled and identified.
Hydrothermal fluids from back-arc / island-arc systems are different to those from mid-ocean ridges, due to shallower water depth, variable source rocks and the input of magmatic volatiles. This influences the geochemical composition of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates. Studying the extent and chemical composition of the related plumes enables us to provide new information on the importance of back-arc / island-arc systems on element-fluxes into the ocean.
Therefore, the focus of my work will be on the characterization of the different hydrothermal vent systems, as well as on the transport and fractionation of hydrothermally derived metals from these systems. Additionally, the data will be compared to fluids from the Kermadec arc (RV Sonne, SO253, Dec. 2016 / Jan. 2017), which is adjacent to the south of the Tonga ridge. Furthermore, hydrothermal fluids from the Mid-Atlantic ridge will be sampled (RV Meteor, scheduled for 2021).
