From this, it can be seen that while the main part of the Amazon plume moves NW towards the Caribbean, another section splits off to move further E. For those who like to see images in \u201creal\u201d colours, the same phenomenon is also visible in the older (2012) satellite image from NASA (above). Chlorophyll is a good indicator of the plume, because the nutrients in the Amazon water allow microscopic, surface-dwelling ocean phytoplankton to feed and grow, and chlorophyll is the energy-producing pigment that gives plants their colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CTD in weather\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q3n73ZF0QLc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Claro que o movimento do navio tamb\u00e9m cobra seu pre\u00e7o de alguns dos cientistas a bordo, e \u00e0s vezes vemos uma cantina relativamente vazia pela manh\u00e3, na hora do caf\u00e9 da manh\u00e3 (embora isso geralmente aconte\u00e7a porque parte da equipe passou metade da noite trabalhando nos equipamentos ou coletando amostras de \u00e1gua). Pelo menos n\u00e3o choveu muito hoje, e podemos ser gratos por isso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weather has not been very kind to us today, and this has made the deployment and retrieval of of some of our sampling equipment trickier than usual. Strong, variable currents in the water column, coupled with wave action and surface wind, mean that the ship\u2019s sophisticated dynamic positioning systems (and crew) have to work harder to maintain the ship in position over a piece of equipment that is suspended on a steel cable over 2km under the ship.
