These seamounts have abundant ferromanganese crusts, which are rich in metals and play a major influence on benthic assemblages; moreover, larvae may be transported between the seamounts. The biogeochemistry surrounding these seamounts is also influenced by different water masses including Pacific Deep Water, and Deep Water Boundary Current to the south, as well as local upwelling. The team will focus on 4 seamounts, sampling the summits, flanks and abyssal plains.

The Constructor University group (CUB) specifically will focus on the geochemistry of the water column to see how the water chemistry above the seamounts connects to the underlying compos

Figure 1: Map of the sampling area

ition of ferromanganese crusts. We will collect samples at the 4 seamounts with a trace metal-CTD for trace metals, metal-binding organic ligands, humic substances, manganese speciation, nutrients and dissolved organic carbon. In addition, we will use a multicorer to collect sediment and porewater samples from the seafloor. At the northernmost (Seamount 420) and southernmost (Burton Seamount) stations, we will perform additional sequential and ultrafiltration steps to look at size fractionation, which can affect trace metal speciation and bioavailability.

On June 4 we departed Auckland aboard the RV Sonne east toward the Louisville Seamount Ridge. The first days of transit started out stormy with high swells, but we managed to quickly set up the lab and overcome initial seasickness. The SO313 team onboard began with mapping and deploying two ADCP Moorings at seamounts 420 and Burton, after which sampling commenced at Burton seamount to the south (Fig. 2). Here the CUB team sampled 3 trace metal CTD depth profiles: a deep station to the north of the seamount, the summit, and the southern flank. A standard stainless steel CTD cast also accompanied all trace metal CTD stations and was performed at several additional stations. The seamount was rich in ferromanganese crusts, which were sampled by other member of the geology team on board, and the biology team performed multinet sampling to capture the seamount fauna.

With Burton seamount completed, we headed north to begin sampling on Seamount 420 next. Compared to Burton (a “cone-type” seamount), Seamount 420 has a wider, flat summit (a “guyot-type” seamount; Fig. 3). We successfully completed 3 trace metal CTD stations similar to Burton. In addition, we were able to sample water from a stromer, which collected bottom water near the seafloor while visually mapping the area with a live video. Finally, we successfully sampled porewater from several multicorers. Further mapping, as well as biological and geological stations were performed by the other groups on board.

<div class="wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex
