I am interested in how mercury and other trace metals interact with geochemical and biological processes, particularly in volcanic and hydrothermal systems. My work also extends to environmental chemistry, examining pollution and its impact on marine ecosystems, with an emphasis on mercury contamination, a critical issue due to its toxic effects on both marine life and human health.

I completed my undergraduate studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where I earned a BSc Degree in Chemistry. My undergraduate thesis, titled “Evaluation of Hg Levels in Sediments of the Saronic Gulf and Piraeus Based on WFD and MSFD Guidelines,” was conducted in the Department of Environmental Chemistry.

Following my undergraduate studies, I pursued postgraduate education in Oceanography and Management of the Marine Environment, an Inter-Institutional Postgraduate Program offered by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. My Master’s thesis was focused on the “Characterization of Trace Elements in Thermal Waters at the Hellenic Volcanic Arc (HVA) of Greece.”

In January 2024, I commenced my PhD research at Constructor University of Bremen and the University of Bremen/MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, under the supervision of Dr. Solveig Bühring and Prof. Dr. Andrea Koschinsky. My PhD project focuses on the hydrothermal systems of Kolumbo and Milos in Greece, as well as the Knipovich Ridge in the Greenland/Spitsbergen region. The research involves detailed trace metal analysis and speciation of hydrothermal fluids, with the goal of advancing our understanding of the geochemical processes occurring in diverse hydrothermal environments.

Participation in Ongoing Projects

Oceanographic Cruise M192-2 Piraeus-Limasol / August-September 2023: During this expedition, I conducted advanced seawater sampling techniques to study hydrothermal sites along Milos Island in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, contributing to research on the interaction between volcanic activity and the marine environment.

Oceanographic Cruise MSM131 Reykjavik – Longyearbyen – Emden / August-September 2024: I am part of the MSM131 expedition aboard the RV MARIA S.
